Mary C. Leto

Mary C. Leto is a conceptual artist specializing in hand made paper and book making. She considers her artists books to be small sculptures to be held and touched while encompassing all forms of art and craft.

Her papers are usually from local vegetation adding to the overall look and feel of the book.

“Holding a book is holding something once alive that still holds a layer of energy. Bound paper made of plant fiber helps to vibrate the authors’ brilliant words. The whole a sculpture, – size, shape, color of the binding the choice of typeface, end papers, book jacket, and spine decoration all combine to hold thoughts, dreams and imagination.

I make paper by hand, bind books and alter discarded books and wouldn’t dream of living without them.”
