Robert Stark – THE NEW AMERICAN SEASCAPE

Robert Stark has lived and painted in Union Dale PA for 40 years and has a studio on Hilton Head Island. He has exhibited in solo exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Phillips Collection, Cheekwood Fine Arts Center, and the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. Recent solo exhibitions include Artworks, AFA, and Keystone College in Scranton PA October 2012. Stark’s paintings have traveled to over 140 world capitols through the State Department program, ‘Art in the Embassies.’

I began walking out to Coligny Beach about a half hour before dawn this past winter, enjoying the quiet and watching the light change as the sun approaches. I noticed that the light behind me was dramatic and subtle, unlike the light as I looked towards the direction of the sun, and began trying to capture this constantly changing nuance, it was a discovery and I made countless attempts to bring it to life with pastels and paper.

The whole exhibition is my visual experience with the light that precedes dawn. In most instances I have worked only up to the time when the sun peaks over the horizon.
The brief period just before the sun is actually seen is very often full of surprise and quickly gone. Every day is a new adventure and I was rarely disappointed, even on dreary days. -Robert Stark
